Una Noche Idishe - October 20, 2007

PAPIROSN
Divina Gloria sings Papirosn (Cigarettes), a song about an orphan boy selling cigarettes on the streets of German-Occupied Grodno during World War I. Grab some kleenex before watching - this stunned the audience.

A SHOA DAINE
Yiddish Argentina meant Yiddish Tangos, and this number transports us to the nightclubs of Buenos Aires. What does a Yiddish Tango sound and look like? Take a little klezmer, add some Yiddish singing and throw in sexy tango footwork - watch this clip to find out.

Tango Ganas, led by Schwee Miguel (foreground, far left), rehearsing for the show.

Klezmer Juice (L-R: Oscar Lomutto, Dan Weinstein and Gustavo Bulgach), rehearsing for the show.

Schwee Miguel and Shelley Delayne practice a tango number with Klezmer Juice.

Divina Gloria discusses the path of her Argentinian ancestry in front of a picture of her zeyde.

Gustavo, with Divina playing the tambourine in the background, rehearses a song.

Gustavo (right) and Dan (left) rehearse a Yiddish Tango.

Gustavo and Divina watch clips from "No Toca Boton," a popular Argentinian sketch-comedy show in which Divina played the "Yiddish girl," a tramp who spoke only Yiddish to her fellow Spanish-speaking actors.

Gabriela Stein and Michael Ragland rehearse their tango parts.

The smooth tango dancing of Schwee and Shelley helped the audience visualize Yiddish in Argentina.

The show ended with a wedding between Divina and Schwee, with people from the audience joining the dancers for a freylekh.
